For more than two decades, our summer camps have been an important investment in the future of Choctaw youth.
I had a chance recently to catch up with Kevin Gwin, Youth Events and Activities Program Manager for the Choctaw Nation, who highlighted the success of the program.
According to Kevin, what began in 2003 as one large basketball camp has grown into more than 20 two-day camps held each summer, reaching young people across a wide range of interests and experiences.
“Today, our camps include Stickball, Rodeo, Cultural, Softball, Baseball, Cheer, Football, Golf, Wildlife and Basketball,” Kevin said.
From the beginning, our vision has been simple: create opportunities that help develop well-rounded young people and provide experiences that extend beyond competition and recreation.
“Throughout the years, we have invited guest speakers to engage with our youth on topics that matter—health and wellness, life skills, personal responsibility, and awareness around issues such as vaping,” Kevin said. “These conversations have always been intended to equip our campers with tools that support success both on and off the field.”
As our camps continued to grow, I recognized an opportunity to strengthen another important area of development: creating space to talk with our youth about faith and what it means to live with purpose, character, and strong Christian values.
“In 2024, I was introduced to Fellowship of Christian Athletes officer John Morris, who initially joined us to help instruct at our annual golf camp,” Kevin said. “During that visit, he shared his passion for encouraging young people through conversations about faith and the mission of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.”
That introduction became the beginning of a meaningful partnership.
“Since then, I have invited John or another FCA representative to participate across our camps each summer,” Kevin said. “They spend time with our youth discussing faith, encouragement, leadership, and the importance of building a strong foundation for life. Each camper also receives an FCA Bible to take home.”
This partnership has expanded our holistic approach to youth development. In addition to supporting physical activity, skill-building, and mental wellness, we are creating opportunities for spiritual growth and reflection.
“Our camps remain focused on helping Choctaw youth discover their strengths, build confidence, and prepare for the future. By investing in the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—we continue working to ensure the next generation is equipped to lead with integrity, resilience, and purpose,.” Kevin said.
