With the potential for severe winter weather this weekend across the Choctaw Nation Reservation and surrounding areas, residents are encouraged to remain weather aware, limit travel if conditions worsen, and monitor Choctaw Nation communications channels for important information.

The Choctaw Nation Office of Emergency Management is actively monitoring conditions. Forecasts call for freezing temperatures, snow or ice that could affect travel, utilities and access to services.

Here are some tips on how to prepare and keep you, your family and your community safe.

Residents are encouraged to take steps now to stay safe, including:

Monitor Forecasts
Monitor local weather forecasts and Choctaw Nation website for updates. The official Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and Choctaw Nation Emergency Management Facebook pages provide reliable information.

Limit Non-Essential Travel
Limit travel during severe weather. Roads and bridges, even if they appear clear, can be hazardous.
The U.S. Department of Transportation reports 24% of weather-related crashes happen on snowy, slushy or icy roads, and 15% during snowfall or sleet. Each year, these conditions cause more than 2,000 deaths and nearly 193,000 injuries nationwide.

Emergency Kit Preparation
Prepare an emergency kit with food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries and warm clothing. The First 72 On You program offers tips for building emergency kits.

Winterize
Check heating systems, winterize your home to prevent frozen pipes, and make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter weather.

Charge Up
Be sure cell phones and essential devices are fully charged. Keep a charged power bank on hand in case of extended outages.

Pets and Animals
Include pets in your winter weather preparations. Cold temperatures can be deadly for animals. Keep them warm, dry and indoors as much as possible. Make sure they have enough food and water, as dehydration is especially dangerous in extreme cold.

Available Services and Assistance
Tribal members needing assistance due to winter weather conditions are encouraged to contact Choctaw Nation resources:

Choctaw Nation Public Safety Dispatch: 580-920-7000

Emergency Assistance Line: 844-709-6301

The Choctaw Nation urges everyone to remain weather alert, check on neighbors and loved ones, and take precautions to protect themselves and their families.
