As summer comes to an end and students begin preparing for another school year, I can’t help but feel excited about the opportunities ahead for our young people. Back-to-school season is about more than buying supplies or getting ready for the first day of class—it’s a time to look ahead, set new goals, and continue building a brighter future.
At the Choctaw Nation, we believe education is one of the greatest investments we can make. Every student who walks into a classroom, every adult who decides to return to school, and every tribal member working to build a new career represents the future of our Nation. That’s why we’re committed to providing resources and support every step of the way.
For our youngest learners and school-aged students, we want families to know that help is available. Through our Student School & Activity Fund, eligible Choctaw students can receive a $100 annual grant to help purchase school supplies and clothing. The Johnson-O’Malley Program also works alongside schools throughout the Choctaw Nation service area to provide additional educational opportunities that meet the unique needs of Native students.
As students begin thinking about life after high school, we offer programs designed to help them prepare for success. High School Student Services connects students in grades 9 through 12 with academic guidance and career planning resources, while our High School Concurrent College Assistance Program helps eligible students earn college credit before they graduate. For students who want to develop leadership skills and make a difference in their communities, the Youth Advisory Board offers meaningful opportunities to grow through servant leadership.
For those pursuing higher education, the Choctaw Nation remains committed to making college more accessible. Our Higher Education Program provides financial assistance to qualified tribal members attending accredited colleges and universities, and our College Freshman Year Initiative offers encouragement and support during one of the most important transitions in a student’s educational journey. We know that the first year of college can be challenging, and we want our students to know they are never alone.
Education doesn’t always follow a traditional path, and we recognize that every journey is unique. Through our Adult Education program, tribal members can earn their High School Equivalency Diploma online, creating new opportunities for themselves and their families. Our Career Development Programs provide financial assistance for training, career guidance, workforce skills development, and academic skill enhancement for those preparing to enter a new profession or advance in their current career.
