Floyd Halderman

Floyd Dee Halderman died unexpectedly on the morning of December 16, 2024 at Sedan City Hospital. He was born January 6, 1955, at the Claremore Indian Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma, as the only son of Charles D. Halderman and Henryetta (Shem) Cheshire. Floyd graduated from Decatur High School in Decatur, Arkansas with the class of 1973. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Army in Ft. Hood, Texas as well as West Berlin, Germany. Residing in Fayetteville, Arkansas after serving in the Army from 1972-1976, Floyd worked as a nurse’s aid at the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Floyd’s other occupations throughout the years included working in construction as well as fulfilling various jobs using his carpentry skills. Floyd moved from Arkansas to Kansas where he ran a small-town grocery store in the city of Elgin for a few years before making a home of Sedan, Kansas. Floyd enjoyed many things: taking in stray dogs and cats, playing cards with visiting family members, never missing an opportunity to send a handwritten card, and looked forward to the annual Chautauqua County Blues Festival, which he referred to as “The Freak Show.” He enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles, he had a colorful vocabulary! Floyd gave to many non-profit organizations and could talk to anyone for hours – he never seemed to have met a stranger! Full of witty remarks that many family members still carry with them, such as “not like that,” “don’t let that dog out,” “raise my rent,” and a held out “riiight” he carried on the family tradition of assigning nicknames to all those around, Floyd D. always found ways to bring his sense of humor to light.

Floyd was predeceased by both of his parents, Charles Halderman and Henryetta (Shem) Cheshire, and a sister he loved dearly, Lillian Walls. Floyd is survived by his daughter Wednesday Pettigrew, and her husband, Yancey, of Bentonville, Arkansas, as well as his three granddaughters, Lacey, Keeley, and Penelope; daughter, Abigail Hooper of San Diego, California; sister, Carmen Loftin of Denton, Texas; numerous other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A military memorial service will be held at 3:00p.m. Saturday, December 21 at First Baptist Church, 220 N. Chautauqua Street in Sedan.
